Audience Research

For this brief, i have had to create a questionnaire, which would provide me with valid data on what college students would like to see/read in the college magazine. After a class discussion, i was able to think of some questions that will appeal to students, and make them answer in a way that would help me conduct my research. My questionnaire consisted of 9 assorted questions that would narrow down what the content in my magazine would be. I walked around college and asked 10 college students 5 female and 5 male, as i thought this would be a representative sample. On a whole the majority of students, all wanted similar things, this is what i found; Firstly most girls and boys were willing to pay either 70p or a £1 for a copy of the collage magazine. Secondly not surprisingly Girls wanted the magazine to consist of gossip, music and details on college parties. Whereas Boys were more interested in reading about sports, music and info on college parties. The majority of girls claimed they would expect the magazine to have between 30-40 pages, due to spending nearly £1 on the magazine, as opposed to Boys who were willing to pay £1 for the magazine to consist of 10-20 pages. Both genders agreed that they would like the magazine to be published on a monthly basis, rather than weekly or termly.

The majority of both female and male also agreed that they would like to see more pictures in the magazine, rather than writing. However many also commented they would like to see relevant writing, that would interest them, rather than boring information not applicable to them. Surprisingly all females argued they would not like to see their own work in the magazine, but would contribute to the magazine in some other way. Whereas the males were more confident they would like to see their work published in the magazine, however not contribute to the magazine in any other way. 50% of my sample suggested they would be more won over by the magazine if it was bigger, and 50% said they would prefer the magazine to be smaller ( pocket size) so it’s easy to tuck away. Finally I asked the students if frequent competitions would encourage them to read the magazine, to which they all replied yes. So overall this questionnaire has giving me an insight into what college students would expect and enjoy from a college magazine. When creating the magazine I will be sure to take into consideration the students opinions, however in some circumstances I will make appropriate changes, which would make my magazine look more presentable.
